How to Not Be a Dry Texter
If people stop replying to you, if conversations fizzle out, or if you've ever been told you're a "dry texter" — this is for you. Being a good texter isn't a talent, it's a skill. And like any skill, you can learn it.
What Is a "Dry Texter"?
A dry texter is someone whose messages kill the conversation. Short, unengaging responses that make the other person do all the work. Think: "lol", "nice", "ok", "haha yeah".
Classic dry texting:
"How was your weekend?"
"Good"
"What did you do?"
"Not much"
"..."
10 Tips to Stop Being a Dry Texter
1. Add Detail to Your Answers
Instead of one-word answers, give them something to work with.
Dry:
"Good"
Better:
"Pretty great actually — tried this new Thai place and it was insane. What about you?"
2. Ask Follow-Up Questions
When they share something, dig deeper. Show genuine curiosity.
Example:
Them: "I went hiking this weekend"
You: "Oh nice! Where did you go? I've been wanting to do more outdoor stuff"
3. React to What They Said
Before asking something new, acknowledge what they told you. It shows you're actually reading, not just going through the motions.
4. Share Opinions and Stories
Don't just answer — add your perspective. Conversations are a two-way street. If they mention a movie, tell them what you thought. If they talk about a trip, share a related experience.
5. Use Emojis Strategically
Emojis add tone and warmth to messages. Without them, texts can feel cold or sarcastic. You don't need to overdo it — one or two per message is perfect.
6. Avoid One-Word Replies
If you catch yourself about to send "nice", "cool", or "lol" — stop. Add literally anything to it. "Lol that's hilarious, reminds me of..." works 10x better.
7. Send Voice Messages or Memes
Sometimes the best way to break the dry streak is to switch formats. A funny meme, a relevant TikTok, or a quick voice note adds personality and keeps things fresh.
8. Don't Wait Too Long to Reply
You don't need to respond instantly, but consistently taking hours to reply kills momentum. If you're busy, a quick "haha let me tell you about this later" is better than silence.
9. Initiate Conversations
If you never text first, people assume you don't care. Send them something you saw that reminded you of them, ask about their day, or share something interesting.
10. Use AI When You're Stuck
There's no shame in needing help. If you're staring at a text and genuinely don't know what to say, let AI suggest something. You can always edit it to sound like you.
